Prof. Joanna Wencel-Delord

🇩🇪 University of Würzburg

🎓 Resume
Joanna Wencel-Delord did her undergraduate studies in Rennes (France) where she obtained an engineering degree and a M.Sc. She carried on with a PhD at the University of Rennes under the supervision of of Dr. Christophe Crévisy and Dr. Marc Mauduit. She then joined the group of Prof. Frank Glorius at the University of Münster (Germany), before joining the University of Strasbourg (France) in 2012 in Prof. Philippe Compain’s group. In 2013, she joined the SynCat team, of which she became the leader in 2021. In 2023, she moved to the University of Würzburg as a Professor of Organic Chemistry.

She has been participating in the supervision of 7 PhD students, 6 post-doctoral researchers, 8 undergraduate students and was a member of 21 PhD committees.

🏆 Awards and distinctions
2020: ERC Starting Grant
2020: Guy Ourisson Prize
2020: CNRS Bronze Medal
2017: Organic Chemistry Division with Julia Prize for Emerging researchers by the French Society of Chemistry
2015-2018: USIAS grant
2014: Attractivity Grant from the IDEX at University of Strasbourg

🔍 Research Interest
As part of the SynCat group at the University of Strasbourg, Joanna’s research interest concerns design of new, catalytic reactions, focusing on:
– metal-catalysed asymmetric C-H activation;
– C(sp3)-H functionalisation of aliphatic chains using a sulfoxide-based chiral auxiliary.

⚙️ Projects in CHAIR
#1 Asymmetric C(sp3)-H activation for the synthesis of chiral aliphatic building blocks for pharmaceutical and agrochemical applications

#2 Asymmetric C(sp2)-H activation for the synthesis original materials

#14 Surfactant-enabled C-H activation for the functionalization of heterocyclic systems
